Dress for yourself and know that it’s not shallow to put in effort into how you look. I’m telling you that you don’t have to choose between smart and sexy. You can have both. You are both.
In a world where people are constantly trying to tell us who we are and the choices we should make, it is imperative now more than ever that we are aware of ourselves. This means defining who you are, knowing who you are and just as importantly, knowing who you are not. People will always try to define you and put you in a box based on their own perceptions of reality, even when those perceptions are false or misconstrued.
Running a business in fashion has highlighted how much people try to limit us. People simply don’t take you serious because ‘your business is based on the superficial things’. They perceive me based on assumptions, false first impressions. They seek their own comfort in trying to form us as they want us to be, in the way that makes them most comfortable. However, I don’t let the shallow comments and opinions define me. I define myself. The fact that I like to look good doesn’t make me a narcissist. The fact that I decided to pursue a career in fashion doesn’t mean that I’m not a serious person. I can look good, have a career in fashion and that doesn’t make me any less of an entrepreneur than someone who owns a law firm.
As we begin a new week, it is imperative that you know this, when we feel that we only fit into one definition, when we believe how others define us or when we define ourselves narrowly, we lose parts of ourselves or feel that we can’t give voice to parts that don’t fit with that definition. Do not let others define you, you define yourself. Be who you want to be and don’t apologise for it!
With love, from Yele.
